3pp Top Ten: May 8, 2016

Every week Paizo sends out an email detailing the happenings of the Paizo store. This includes top 10 lists of what sells on their stores. Each week I'll be focusing on the list, 'Top 10 downloads from other companies' and commenting on the rise of the companies involved and changes of the list.

This week I'm trying a different approach to how I talk about the list. Normally I discuss it in each entry but with so many consistent sellers that make the list I am running out of ways to talk about the same product so instead I'll discuss the list in general after showing the list grouping by company.

1. Kineticists of Porphyra 3 - Purple Duck Games

2. One on One Adventures Compendium - Expeditious Retreat Press

3. Path of War Expanded - Dreamscarred Press

4. Kineticists of Porphyra 2 - Purple Duck Games

5.  In the Company of Unicorns - Rite Publishing

6. Treasury of Winter - Legendary Games

7. Ships of Skyborne - Drop Dead Studios

8. Gonzo 2 - Little Red Goblin Games

9. Kineticists of Porhyra - Purple Duck Games

10. Way of the Wicked-Book #1: Knot of Thorns - Fire Mountain Games

Kineticists of Porphyra 1, 2, and 3 have all made it to the list again making for a strong showing for Kineticist interest. It definitely crowds up the list but I already know 1 and 2 are really good books. One fills in some blanks giving Kineticists some options that were inevitable but balanced and fun. The second book takes things up a notch by evolving the concept and with more esoteric elements, new fun archetypes and a ton of wild talents that give a lot of range to what the Kineticist can do.

One on On Adventures is still the top adventure related product this week, and I understand completely. The product is adventures for one GM and one PC that takes the time and care to cater to the needs of a lone class when it comes to what kind of challenges to apply. Not only that but with one GM and one PC you can play without having to organize a large and probably flaky group with lives that prevent time for gaming. The concept is not only a solid one but the adventures are well made for it's context.

Dreamscarred Press stays on the list with Path of War Expanded, the expansion to the popular Path of War. If you liked the old Book of 9 Swords this series blows it out of the water with diverse maneuvers, goodies for classes outside of the maneuver-based classes and even psionic support. Fans of Path of War have a good time because now their fighting classes can be versatile and powerful like the casting classes.

Rite Publishing has made some steller race books. If their title In the Company of Monsters is any indication (as well as a few other race books I've picked up like In the Company of Henge) then not only is In the Company of Unicorns evocative and full of flavor but gives plenty of solid crunch to bring the subject to life in your games to make for a balanced experience.

Treasury of Winter Gives you a cache of items for a wintery campaign as part of their Winter Plug-in line. These items are meant to be great additions to wintery slavic leaning adventures like Reign of Winter.

I got my hands on Ships of Skyborne from the Kickstarter (review pending) and it is pretty glorious. This expands the concept seen in the stat air ship stat block Ultimate Combat to all new levels letting you make all kinds of vehicles and customize them. I especially reccomend this if you're running any kind of Final Fantasy inspired campaign. Also don't forget to check out the Players Guide to Skyborne, which opens up a beautiful and intriguing world to play in.

Gonzo 2 picks up where Gonzo 1 left off but is bigger, badder and way crazier. These are straight up brand new ways to play by taking seriously the most silly concepts, like a Battle Butler, Henshin Hero, Magical Girl, or Sparkle Princess. Beyond that you get rules for giant robots, drugs, magic items, and much much more.

Way of the Wicked is back on the map for the second week. Probably related to the fact that Paizo's Hell's Vengeance is halfway through. This is the first book in an adventure path where you get to be bad. Its a big book where instead of being a pansy do-gooder you get to be evil. And why stop there? Every book in the series has great reviews so show them who's boss as you kidnap princesses, kill kings, and get revenge and show those villains that keep getting defeated by unwashed heroes how it's really done.

As far as other things that have caught my eye;

Interjection Games has put out Ultimate Runesmithing on Paizo.com now. This was put on my wishlist last week for a few reasons. Firstly Interjection Games is consistantly fantastic when it comes to crunch for new classes. The classes always at least grant a new play experience with a lot of options per class which cover new concepts or new assumptions. Secondly the description for Runesmithing is intriguing. Although my preference in regards to runes has been as a door for non-casters to use a little magic the description leads me to be reminded of Akashic Mysteries and believe that we'll get something unique out of it.

Ponyfinder has put out the Everglow Bestiary. This is a huge boon because I've just been calling kobolds Diamond Dogs and made some pallet swaps for Pony games.

Sherwood: The Legend of Robin Hood is a setting book that doesn't seem that exciting but it promises means to play the setting in a 'historic mode' that leaves out magic and deliver a type of action point system for mundane derring dos so it may be a stealth hit for anyone wanting to play in a magic-less game.

I've talked about Rhune's Campaign Guide as my possible foothold in the setting but I thought I'd mention it again because the little I've seen of the setting the basic premise is very interesting. In a nutshell it's 'Nordic Dungeonpunk' which is a quick way to sell me because I like everything about that phrase.

As the kickstarter project starts to wrap up we're seeing a lot more releases for Hypercorps 2099.  Keep an eye out for the full book eventually where we get new rules and subsystems for superhero/cyberpunk shenanigans, including a mythic like overlay for superpowers with even Spheres of Power support.

The Four Horsemen banner continues the Horrifically Overpowered Feats line with a new book. The previous iterations were pretty popular so if you're a fan this is a nice pick.

Legendary Games presents a hybrid class of Witch and Gunslinger with their release of Legendary Hybrids: Deadeye Hexer. Now a hexslinger is a concept that I've seen a few times in third party archetypes so I don't know how I'll react to a class dedicated to the concept but Legendary Games is consistently good for class support so I'm putting it in my wishlist for further consideration.

Another shoutout to Technology Unleashed as one of the few straight tech books out there. This is somewhat at the top of my buylist purely because I'm running a scifi campaign and as such it's going to move up on my review list for better or worse.

If you're really still into Kineticists after three entire books dedicated to them or if you just want one book and leave it at that, check out Rogue Genius Game's support with Everyman Options: Kineticists. Everyman products are consistently innovative and cleanly written so you can't go wrong here, especially with Alexander Augunas at the helm.

Well that's it for this week. I'll see you next week with more looks at Paizo's top ten list as well as trending products that should be on your radar.
